Analytical Chemist

Job Description:

Perform complex/highly specialized chemical analyses of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in environmental samples (soil, water, groundwater) using variety of Gas Chromatographic/Mass Spectrometric (GC/MS) techniques using primarily U.S.-EPA methods 8260B; use data reduction software (LIMS, DATA tool); work with sources of errors in chemical analyses, apply statistical methods (Equilibrium, related thermodynamic parameters, coefficients; electrochemical potentials); use electroanalytical, chromatographic (Gas, liquid),  spectroscopic techniques (Voltammetry), Mass Spectrometry; improve existing analytical methods; develop new analytical methods to meet technical/business objectives; prepare: liquid samples preparations, solid sample analyses; perform data analysis using state-of-the-art GC/MS and Purge & Trap analytical instrumentation; use company’s Laboratory Information Management System software (LIMS); perform technical calculations; report analytical results, generate analytical reports; ensure produced data complies with stringent Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) requirements of analytical methods performed per government regulations; schedule work priorities and responsibilities; use detailed technical QA/QC requirements for analytical methods; perform chemical analyses in strict accordance with U.S. government, CA State, and company’s QA/QC program’s requirements; provide peer review of data generated in analysis laboratory to ensure compliance with method requirements; maintain instrumentations; troubleshoot/repair analytical instrumentation for VOC analysis division of laboratory; maintain accurate documentation on instrument calibration, troubleshooting, repair activities; develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in VOC analyses GC/MS division of laboratory; compile complex Level 4 analytical data packages on high-profile projects for review by clients/third-party auditors to ensure compliance of data with applicable QA/QC requirements; keep abreast of state-of-the-art developments in analytical techniques/instrument technological advancements for development of new analytical methods.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology plus coursework, internships, or experience to include working with sources of errors in chemical analyses, applying statistical methods (Equilibrium, related thermodynamic parameters, coefficients and using chromatographic (Gas, liquid),  Mass Spectrometry. Experience and skills may be gained through academic coursework and concurrently while pursuing academic studies.
